Botanical Etching Workshop
With Monika Lukowska
Delve into the sculptural delight of our native flora in this acid etching workshop. Inspired by the gorgeous botanical designs in our new collection, use the delicate process of etching to create your own limited edition prints to proudly hang at home or gift to a loved one. Hand coloured and completely unique, let your love of the flora around us move you to sketch, ink and press the morning away in good company.
Etching is a traditional printmaking method of creating delicate fine lines and lots of detail. We will begin with a look at some fresh flowers, considering the forms, colours and textures. After some sketching and discussion, we’ll consolidate our ideas and begin the process of printmaking by preparing a printing plate and using a sharp tool to etch our design. We’ll guide you through inking and printing your plate through our big old etching press. Once you have printed your design you can experiment with colouring and layering to create a unique artwork. At the end of the class, you will have created a limited edition set of coloured prints. These prints will be ready to frame and hang, or you might decide to use them to inspire further works.
As with all Beau Est Mien workshops, you don’t need to bring any special equipment with you, so you can just turn up and enjoy your morning. We recommend you have a look at some prints that inspire you before you come (there’s plenty on our website)! You might want to bring some photos you have taken or images you have found to excite your creative juices or even some bits and bobs collected on your way into the studio, fallen leaves and flowers make great inspiration!
Etching is a fantastic process for beginner printers, who often describe the act of etching their plate as a therapeutic experience. We believe in the magic of printmaking – whatever your drawing skill, creative experience or confidence level, something incredible happens when you pull your plate through those rollers and reveal your print at the other side. We can guarantee that you will be amazed at the art you produce.
